Previously there are many rumours, speculation, unofficial details and spy shots on the BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo (GT). Now we got the official details and the official picture of the GT.

By the look, the 5 series GT is a mixed combination of sedans, station wagons, fastbacks, coupes, MPVs, SUVs basically all forms of design. BMW called it as a SAV which is short for ‘ Sport Activity Vehicle ‘. Come to think of it, we can say that it is a X6 saloon. But The 5-Series GT supposedly blends the sporty shape of a fastback with the elevated seating position of an SUV, the cargo-hauling versatility of an MPV and the roominess of a 7-Series.

The Gt interior and exterior design is based on the spacious 7  series. The interior is as spacious as the roomy 7-series.Unique features include frameless doors -a first for a BMW sedan, a two-piece rear hatch that can open either as a whole or partially through a trapdoor underneath the window and sliding rear seats that can move fore-and-aft.

BMW announced three variants for the 5 Series GT, the 550i, 535i and the 530d.The 3.0 liter turbo diesel have the best fuel efficiency, with 245 hp and 540 Nm of torque, the fuel consumption is only 6.5 liters/100 km awhile CO2 emissions is 173 g/km.

BMW has confirmed that the Gran Turismo will come with its new 8-speed automatic transmission, so far only featured in the 760i 12-cylinder variant, which will provide nothing but smooth, effortless transitions between gears

The GT rides on a modified version of the next-generation 5-Series sedan’s platform. Measuring 4,998 mm (197-inches) in length, 1,901 mm (74.8-inches) in width and 1,559 mm (61.4-inches) in height with a limo-like 3,070 mm (120.9-inches) wheelbase, the GT is larger than the current 5-Series in every dimension.

The GT’s suspension is made mostly of aluminum, with BMW’s unique Integral-V rear axle and a double track control arm for the front. Dynamic Drive Control is standard which, along with the optional Adaptive Drive, works with the air suspension at the back and the infinitely variable dampers to assure the most black-bear-climbing-a-tree-like traction and control.

The public unveiling of the 5-Series GT will take place at the Frankfurt Motor Show in mid-September. Sales are expected to start on both sides of the Atlantic by winter 2009.
