SUNGAI PETANI: UMW Toyota Motor Sdn Bhd has surpassed its target sales of new cars for the year by 3,000 units, to hit a total of 98,000 units.

Executive director (strategic marketing group) Aminar Rashid Salleh said the company had already met its targeted sales of 95,000 units for the year last month.

He said that given the uncertain global economic trends, next year would be a challenging year for the company.

He said Toyota secured about 18.4% of the total industry volume (TIV) in the country, adding that it targeted to maintain the same percentage next year.

The Malaysian Automobiles Association (MAA) was in the midst of setting the TIV forecast for next year, he said.

“Only after that will we be able to set our production target for next year,” he said.

MAA targeted 510,000 units in TIV for this year but the figure might hit 540,000 vehicles, he told reporters after opening the company’s latest pre-owned car centre, TopMark, in Sungai Petani yesterday.

UMW Toyota Motor Sdn Bhd is a joint venture between UMW Holdings Bhd and Japan’s Toyota Motor Corp and Toyota Tsusho Corp.

Aminar Rashid said the company had 91 sales and after-sales outlets nationwide and planned to expand further.

On its used car sales outlets, he said the company had set up seven TopMark pre-owned car centres so far nationwide, including the latest in Sungai Petani.

“We have sold 13,599 units of Toyota used cars at TopMark used vehicles centres, which is 68% higher than last year,” he said.

In his speech earlier, he said TopMark centres had traded in 13,195 units of used vehicles, which was 28% higher than the total last year.

“We plan to double our TopMark network to 14 outlets in five years to provide better support to our new vehicle branches and dealers and tap the huge potential in pre-owned vehicles business,” he said.
