Motor Image Group (MIG), the sole distributor of Subaru vehicles in the region, expects to sell five units monthly at its newly opened showroom here.
The showroom, Motor Image Sdn Bhd’s third in the country after Petaling Jaya and Kuala Lumpur, sells the Japanese-made Subaru Impreza S-GT priced at RM187,000 on-the-road and the all-new Subaru Forester Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) 2.5XT at RM195,000 on-the-road.
Group chief executive Glenn Tan said Johoreans were much more familiar with the brand and more receptive of its cars, as many Singapore-registered Subaru entered Johor daily.
“We decided to open a showroom in Johor Baru as we have been receiving many enquiries from Johoreans on Subaru cars,”
According to him, Subaru customers in Malaysia are typically motoring and car enthusiasts but this is a stereotype that the company sees itself breaking away from with the latest offering.
“Subaru has moved away from its traditional ‘boy racer’ image. Our latest range of cars reflect a sleeker and more sophisticated design to suit the taste of a wider consumer base, especially working professionals and entrepreneurs,” he said.
Tan said high performance cars still had a strong following in the region despite the increasing interest in fuel-efficient vehicles.
In the region, China would be the most important market due to the emergence of new wealth in the republic, he said.
“There is a growing demand for niche brands in China especially in the southern parts of the mainland including the high performance cars,” he said.
He added that MIG would in November launch the new Impreza ST-I for the Malaysian market.
MIG has offices in China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Taiwan, Thailand and Singapore.
The group is wholly owned by Hong Kong-listed Tan Chong International Ltd which is involved in automotive, commercial, manufacturing, property investment and trading businesses in Asia.-BERNAMA
