Berjaya Corp Bhd’s subsidiary, Bermaz Motor Sdn Bhd, has teamed up with Mazda Corp of Japan to undertake a manufacturing programme to produce and distribute Mazda cars in Malaysia.
Berjaya said in a statement that the joint venture (JV) was to increase local assembly and manufacturing activities of Mazda models in Malaysia following the completely-knocked-down programme for the Mazda3 by Inokom Corp Sdn Bhd. This will be followed by the newly-launched Mazda CX-5.
“In this regard, Mazda will be able to reduce costs and thereby gain competitive advantage to support the sales and marketing efforts of its distributor, Bermaz Motor,” Berjaya said in the statement.
In addition, it said the JV would increase localisation activities, create more local vendors involvement in the Mazda localisation programme.
Berjaya said that the JV programme was a logical extension of the business activities of Bermaz Motor in its handling of the Mazda brand following a remarkable track record over a short period oftime.
“The impressive total sales volume from 2008 (991 units) to 2011 (6,131 units), showedthe commitment of Bermaz Motor to Mazda,” Berjaya said.
Bermaz Motor had launched several Mazda models including Mazda6, Mazda CX-7 and BT-50.
According to Berjaya, both parties are looking forward to a stronger market representation for the Mazda brand via the establishment of Mazda Malaysia Sdn Bhd, a joint venture between Bermaz Motor and Mazda which will be helmed by Shinji Sakatani as CEO.
Featuring SKYACTIV engine technology, the Mazda CX-5 produces maximum power while keeping fuel consumption to the bare minimum. The CX-5 is offered in three trim choices namely Active, Dynamic and Individual.
All trim options are powered by a 2.0 litre SKYACTIV-G petrol engine. The SKYACTIV system aims to maximise performance and keep internal combustion as efficient as possible while reducing fuel consumption and emissions. The model variants offer between 6.8-6.9 litres /100km depending on the model.
The CX-5 is certainly pleasing to the eye with its smooth curves and robust SUV feel. The interior is somewhat sporty and offers loads of space for five adults and a heap of luggage.
The CX-5 also comes with an array of safety features such as Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) with traction control, ABS with EBD and EBA, bi-xenon headlights (Individual model only) and hill-start control. Airbags (Front/Side/Curtain) are fitted as standard on all Mazda CX-5 models.
