iSPORT THE LASTEST TEAM TO CONSIDER ENTRY INTO F1
LONDON: The iSport International team that raced in the GP2 feeder series with Brazilian Bruno Senna last year is considering a Formula One entry in 2010 if budgets are capped, founder Paul Jackson said on Monday.
Joining a list of would-be contenders that already includes Lola, Aston Martin and Prodrive chairman David Richards and a planned US-based team, Jackson told Germany’s
motorsport-magazin.com website that he was serious.
“I aim to give a few people in F1 a kick up the backside and to show them that they are chucking money out of the window for nothing,” he was quoted as saying.
Senna, nephew of Formula One’s late triple champion Ayrton, would be an obvious candidate.
“That would be fantastic. I’m convinced that he belongs in Formula One,” said Jackson, whose front-running team won the 2007 GP2 title with Germany’s Timo Glock — now a Toyota Formula One driver.
Senna tested with Honda last year, before the Japanese manufacturer pulled out of Formula One, and has subsequently also been linked to Toro Rosso. He was GP2 runner-up last year.
Jackson said iSport were contemplating either an independent entry using their GP2 engineers or joining forces with a team already on the Formula One starting grid such as Red Bull-owned Toro Rosso.
“The existing teams aren’t structured to operate within a £30 million budget. So it would probably be better to start with a blank sheet.”
The governing International Automobile Federation (FIA) and teams are currently discussing a proposed optional budget cap from next year.
Those accepting it would be granted greater technical freedom compared to the restrictions imposed on teams continuing with unlimited budgets.
FIA president Max Mosley has said the governing body will select three new teams from those expressing an interest to enter with a budget cap.
