APPROVED PERMIT (AP) SCHEME FOR IMPORTED VEHICLES SHOULD BE SCRAPPED
KUALA LUMPUR, April 27 – The Approved Permit (AP) scheme for imported vehicles should be scrapped immediately as it only benefited a few businessmen, Gerakan vice president Datuk Mah Siew Keong said.
Doing away with the scheme would also open up more business opportunities for all Malaysians, he said in a statement Monday.
He was commenting on a statement by Deputy International Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir who said that the government was considering an option to scrap the scheme.
Mah, who is also Gerakan’s head of central economic bureau, said the AP scheme was a protectionism policy and had created a monopoly for some businessmen.
He said that cancelling the scheme should be treated as another benefit for all citizens following Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak’s announcement of economic liberalisation policy.
The government, he added, wanted to practise a more fair, liberal and transparent policy and doing away with the AP system would be another important step.
