ZAMRI’S NEW RIDE UNVEILED
Following the hype another local rider will become Malaysia’s next wildcard entry in the Malaysian Motorcycle Grand Prix (MotoGP) this weekend at the Sepang International Circuit (SIC), motorsports enthusiasts now have another thing to cheer about as the parties involved announced the team name and unveiled the bike today at the Kuala Lumpur City Centre (KLCC).
Made possible through a close collaboration between PETRONAS, SIC, Two Wheels Motor Racing (TWMR), Hong Leong Yamaha Motor and Moriwaki Engineering, the team was christened PETRONAS SIC TWMR Malaysia.
PETRONAS, SIC and TWMR are the main sponsors and the colour of the bike in the combination of the three title sponsors which is green, red and white. The team is also supported by Kementerian Belia dan Sukan (KBS), Automobile Association of Malaysia (AAM), MotodotMania, Racing Boy, Uma Racing, Berik, SHOEI and Dunlop.
Riding the bike number 87 would be none other than Mohd Zamri Baba from PETRONAS Yamaha Malaysia, one of Malaysia’s top riders who currently compete in the premier CP130 category of the PETRONAS AAM Malaysian Cub Prix Championship and the SuperSports 600cc PETRONAS Asia Road Racing Championship (ARRC).
Though executed on such short notice-just three weeks before the race, Ron Hogg, TWMR Promotions Director was pleased with the development and looks forward to an eventful weekend. “The rationale behind the programme is to provide local riders the opportunity to proceed on to the world stage. On that basis, our target is to expose these riders every year and I am delighted to see we’ve followed through with Zamri being announced as the first Malaysian to participate in Moto2, ” said Ron referring to last year’s success where two wildcards, Muhd Zulfahmi Khairuddin and Elly Idzlianizar Ilias were born.
Ron went on to express his gratitude to the different parties and said, “Having a pool of talents is just half of the story and none of this would have been possible without PETRONAS’s support as they are the title sponsors for the Cub Prix Championship and PETRONAS ARRC where our riders come from. Also with SIC management, we have been able to execute more plans for our riders.”
“I hope in future we will be able to scale greater heights and more co-operate sponsors flooding in to support the motor racing industry as it would be great to see more Malaysian riders making waves at the international level. That is what we hope to achieve in the future but at the present, let’s all head to Sepang this weekend and give our support to our very own two Malaysian riders, Zamri and Fahmi,” concluded Ron.
