TOYOTA REPORTS 33 PCT RISE IN MARCH SALES

UMW Toyota Motor Sdn Bhd announced today that its March 2009 sales increased by 33 percent to 7,113 units from 5,367 units in the previous month.

The Toyota Vios remained the leader in the small passenger car (1400cc to 1500cc) with 49 percent market share while Hilux retained its lead in the four-wheel drive light duty pick-ups segment with 51.8 percent market share, the company said.

“We believe that both the Vios and Hilux will reach their targeted sales volume for this year,”  said in a statement today.

Since its introduction in 2003, a total of 128,170 units of Toyota Vios have been sold, making it the best-selling Toyota model in Malaysia.

For the Toyota Hilux, 43,076 units have been sold so far since the current model’s launch in 2005.

For the multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) segment, UMW Toyota still claimed market leadership with a total of 4,952 units sold for the first quarter of this year, 2,017 units more than its closest competitor.

“March sales were 1,987 units with the Toyota Avanza being the highest contributor with 1,332 units sold. To date, 117,946 units of the Toyota Avanza have been sold since its introduction in 2004,” the company said.

UMW Toyota remained confident that the total industry volume will reach 480,000 units this year, with second-half 2009 sales expected to be stronger than the first six months.

Going forward, Kuah said demand for new cars was on the rise with improved sales in March this year and a better outlook over the next few months.

UMW Toyota, he said, maintained its position as the market leader among the non-national makes with sales of 17,313 units, more than 6,600 units ahead of its nearest competitor.
