    PROTON S16 LAUNCHED IN AUSTRALIA.

Proton has announced that it will launch its S16 small sedan in Australia on December 1, at a cost of just $11,990 drive away. This will make it the cheapest car in the Australian market.

A base price of under $13,000 was originally postulated by Proton, however favourable exchange rates, thanks to a high Aussie dollar, have enabled the Malaysian manufacturer to trim the entry price even further.

“S16 will be the only new four door sedan available in Australia for less than $16,000 and will outpoint low-cost hatches and three-door models by offering a 1.6 litre engine and great equipment levels,” Billy Falconer, Proton Cars Australia said in a release.

The car is powered by a 1.6l twin cam Campro IAFM engine, developing 100 hp at 6,000 rpm. It provides a fuel consumption rating of 6.3l/100 km. The new sedan will come in only one trim level for now, namely the GX with manual transmission. A higher trim, the GX (automatic transmission) will be launched in early 2010, together with a GXR variant.

The GX offered now comes equipped with a 413 liter boot, AM/FM/CD audio system, power steering, air conditioning, remote central locking with immobilizer and alarm and drivers SRS airbag.

The GXR version to be released next year will boast the highest level of equipment on the S16 line, adding features like alloy wheels, reverse sensors and fog lamps as standard.

Full specifications and pricing for the S16 range will be released at the car’s launch on December 1.
