PETRONAS IS EXCLUSIVE OEM LUBRICANTS PARTNER FOR PROTON

Proton Holdings Bhd aims to grow its lubricant business up to two million litres in the next two to three years, aided by its collaboration with national oil corporation Petronas.

Its managing director Datuk Syed Zainal Abidin Syed Mohamed Tahir said today that revenue from the lubricant business was still not signficant for the national car maker but it has untapped potential.

“We have to improve our sales and service in the domestic market and with Petronas, the percentage will improve,” he told reporters after a signing ceremony between Proton and Petronas Lubricants International (PLI) here.

With the agreement, Petronas is now the exclusive partner to Proton for all its domestic and global original equipment manufacturered (OEM) lubricants and functional fluids.

In turn, Proton will be supported by PLI in the car maker’s effort to produce lubricants that cater specifically to its requirements.

At the event, Petronas’ vice president for oil business, Md Arif Mahmood, said the corporation’s focus under the collaboration was the after-sales service.

“With that, we will see market share growing for us and Proton,” he said, adding that the agreement was initially for 10 years.

Earlier in his speech, Md Arif said the tie-up could also help Proton in improving customer retention, thereby increasing the opportunity for repeat sales.

“As Proton’s customer retention improves, sales of lubricants are also expected to improve in tandem, thus generating more volume and greater revenue for both parties,” he said.

At the event, Petronas’ president and chief executive officer Tan Sri Hassan Marican said the country’s total lubricant business stood at 260 million litres and the corporation’s share was 21 to 22 per cent.
