PERODUA EXPECTS SALES TO REACH 185,000 UNITS THIS YEAR

GEORGE TOWN, August 9 — Perusahaan Otomobil Kedua Sdn Bhd (Perodua) is confident of sales reaching 185,000 units by end of this year.

Managing director Aminar Rashid Salleh said the confidence was based on the orders received and the encouraging public response towards its Myvi, Viva and Alza models.

He said that achieving sales of 185,000 units this year would exceed the original sales target of 176,000 units.

“We are very optimistic of achieving the original sales target and expects to sell up to 185,000 units based on the orders received for three Perodua models each month,” he told reporters after officiating the Perodua one-stop centre at Bayan Lepas here Monday.

Aminar said for July this year, orders were received for 23,000 units, comprising 9,300 units for the Myvi, 9,000 units for the Viva and 4,600 units for the Alza.

He said that up to July, Perodua had sold 115,000 units, an increase of 20.3 per cent compared to the same period last year.

Aminar said sales of the Myvi model was driven by the introduction of the Myvi LE targeted at women, with the orders received for the new model at 2,793 units since its launch on July 7.

“About 70 per cent of the buyers are women, and there is also the possibility of male buyers purchasing the model for female family members,” he said.

On the proposal for a strategic partnership between Perodua and Proton Holdings Bhd, Aminar said the matter needed the approval of shareholders and there had been no discussion so far.

“We are prepared to discuss with them areas which can benefit both parties without any negative effect on each other’s business model,” he said.

Aminar said Perodua had collaborated with Proton before in supplying 120,000 cylinder heads each year for the Proton Campro engine.

He also said that Perodua and Proton could work together in vendor development to help the 100 distributors involved and enable both companies to enjoy long-term benefits.
