MORE VEHICLE FAILS THROUGH OWNERSHIP TRANSFER BECAUSE OF TINTED GLASS & HALF CUT FOR SELLING 2nd HAND CARS
About one percent of the vehicles that went through ownership transfer inspection at Puspakom Sdn Bhd’s branches nationwide last year failed the test.
In a statement here Monday, its chief executive officer, Khairudin Datuk Yusoff, said a total of 5,640 units did not comply with the Road Transport Act, 1987.
“Among the common factors are the tampered chassis and engine number, half cut on chassis frame and tinted glass.
He said a total of 566,623 vehicles went through the transfer of ownership inspection in 2008.
Puspakom said it detected 2,161 cases of vehicles with tempered engine numbers which incidentally represented the category with the highest number of offences committed, followed by the case of tinted glass (1,879 units).
It said others included the half-cut vehicles (999 units) and tempered chassis number (601 units).
Khairudin said the mandatory inspection was timely to protect users.
“Since its implementation in July 2007 until December 2008, 11,137 vehicles failed to comply with the regulations,” he said.
Puspakom advised those who wished to buy a second-hand car to send it for a voluntary inspection at Puspakom first to avoid any inconvenience and problems later.
