HICOM-CHEVROLET TO UNVEIL 2 NEW MODELS

HICOM-Chevrolet Sdn Bhd will launch two new cars and two enhanced models in 2009 as it tries to buck the possible contraction of overall vehicles sales this year.

Newly-appointed chief executive officer Sanjeev Garg thinks the launches will help the company post 10 per cent sales growth.

Sanjeev did not disclose much about the launches except to say the brand new products are a mid-size sedan and a large sedan.

“We will be telling you more about these products closer to their launch,” he said at a media gathering in Glenmarie, Shah Alam, yesterday.

HICOM-Chevrolet sold about 1,000 vehicles last year, with 60 per cent coming from the Chevrolet Captiva, a sports utility vehicle.

Industry observers have expected total industry sales to drop by up to 35 per cent this year as the economic slowdown takes its toll on consumer spending.

A total of 548,111 vehicles were sold last year, 12.4 per cent more than in 2007.

For 2009, the official forecast from the Malaysian Automotive Association was a 12.4 per cent drop to 480,000 units.

Sanjeev, who is from India, said he will continue the work of his predecessor, Yukontorn Wisadkosin. And this means the continuation of the “Chevrolution” mantra.

“We will continue to always keep our customers‘ best interest in mind by delivering on our promise of quality products and value,” he said.
