Feb 8, The Malaysia QI-MeritusMahara.com team finished fourth in the standings after Round Two of the GP2 Asia series at the Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi yesterday.
The team’s Alexander Rossi and Luca Fillipi emerged ninth and 17th respectively in the sprint race.
They stayed on 11 points, three behind Super Nova and four behind DPR. Team iSport International lead the way with 51 points with two rounds to go in the season.
The grid was reversed for the top eight for the start of the 22-lap second race with Rossi starting third after his sixth placing in the sprint race and Filippi starting 14th.
Rossi rocketed from third to second position while Filippi improved by seven positions from the start and was up to seventh.
There was a lot of action on the track with Josef Kral (Super Nova Racing) stopping after hitting Sam Bird and Filippi at Turn One. It was a move that dashed Filippi’s hopes of a points finish.
After that, the safety car was deployed briefly to clear the track after car 8 stopped at turn 1. Filippi was lucky to be able to drive back to the pits with only two flat tyres.
He rejoined the race and was immediately back on the pace.
Rossi was pushing Michael Herck but lost a bit of time at the restart when the safety car came back in and he dropped to fourth and then to fifth on lap 12 while Filippi was trying to recover in 20th.
