DONT INSTALL LOW QUALITY CHEAP SEAT BELT!
The Road Safety Department expressed concern with car owners who installed sub-standard rear seat belts, just to comply to the requirement and not take into account, the importance of safety.
Road Safety Department director-general Datuk Suret Singh said the department had inspected a number of car accessories shops after receiving complaints that rear seat belts installed were of low quality.
Suret said the installing of rear seat belts can cost anywhere between RM60 to RM250, based on the material and quality of the manufactured belt but the department had received complaints that some low quality cheap seat belts can snap upon impact or when used force.
“When installing rear seat belts, owners must take into account the quality and durability of the product and not just install it just because the use of rear seat belts was compulsory,” he told reporters at a Road Safety Campaign held at the New Pantai Expressway in PJS 5, here today.
Suret added that action cannot be taken against car accessories shops because some of these shop owners themselves do not know the actual qualities of such products or how reliable they are.
“We will visit car accessories shops and check on the products sold but at the same time brief them on the expected quality of rear seat belts,” he said.
