CHENNAI TO HOST FIM PETRONAS ASIAN BIKE RACE.
Top Asian motor racing officials have certified that the Sriperumbudur race circuit is fit to host the FIM (Federation Internationale Motorcyliste) Petronas Asian Road Racing Championship and the UAM (Asian Motorcycle Union) Race of Nations early next month.
After a 12-year hiatus, the south Indian city is all set to host the fourth round of the FIM Petronas race and the UAM race in Sriperumbudur, located about 40km outside Chennai.
“Officials from UAM, Petronas and Two Wheels Motor Racing Malaysia (promoters of the series) were here to inspect and certify the circuit.
“They are happy with circuit but have asked us to include some safety features.
“Ten countries from Asia will be participating in Chennai,” Vicky Chandhok, vice-president of the Madras Motor Sports Club told Bernama recently.
The officials had requested the organisers to place gravel barriers at the end of the three long circuits to slow down the bikes, in case they overshoot.
During the one-day race on Sept 6, about 20 bikers would take part in the 600cc Superspot class and 115cc Underbone category.
In the UAM cup, racers would participate in the 125cc Honda Stunner bikes.
Malaysian bikers would compete in both the races.
