  • CAUSES OF HIGH FUEL CONSUMPTION

Have a sudden high fuel consumption oF your car? Lets discuss the common problem or causes of high fuel consumption instead of driving style. We try to know the technical problem that contribute to high fuel consumption.
Fuel efficiency, is a form of thermal efficiency, meaning the efficiency of a process that converts chemical potential energy contained in a carrier fuel into kinetic energy or work. We can increase the fuel efficiency by maintaning the car to the optimum setting.

    CAUSES OF HIGH FUEL CONSUMPTION

The causes of high fuel consumption would be:

+ air intake : This will cover the cleanliness of carburetor or throttle body and the air filter. Make sure there is no obstruction in the air intake system and no carbon deposits or dirt. This is the most important part to get better air flow and fuel consumption.
+ tyres : Inflate your tyres regularly to make sure the tyres are inflated within the limits. If possible, inflate it with nitrogen due to its good property that will retain longer in the tyre and is lighter.
+ spark plug : Check your spark plug at several interval for wear or carbon deposit. Change it when it reaches 40,000km – 50,000km.
    CAUSES OF HIGH FUEL CONSUMPTION
+ tuning : Tune your engine to get optimum fuel consumption. Tuning is very important to have a complete combustion.

+ Faulty O2 sensor :  This sensor got wear & tear also and expected life is abt 50,000km to 100,000km. when the sensor starts to die, it usually signal low voltage to the ecu and ecu automatically keeps adding fuel to yr engine.
    CAUSES OF HIGH FUEL CONSUMPTION

+ sport rims : SOme sport rims is heavier than the standard rims. This will cause higher fuel consumption of you car.
+ fuel filter : Clogged fuel filter also can cause high fuel consumption.

+ Injectors : can spoil or get dirty. Go to service center to clean it.
+ brake caliper : brake calipers also need servicing.. if too much dirt and debris get stuck to the brake pistons, it can get jam.. thats when ur engine have to work hard to push the extra load created by the braking.  jack car up and roll wheels to check

+ insufficient engine grounding : Many people didnt realize how important engine grounding is. The grounding cable which costs around RM100  with the voltage stabilizer will make so much different on your car performance and fuel consumption. It is highly recommended that you install the device.
    CAUSES OF HIGH FUEL CONSUMPTION
+ faulty MAP sensor: Faulty map sensor creates inconsistent signals to engine ecu and results in inconsistent a/f ratio..
the only way to detect is when yr car starts having inconsistent performce like running rich 1day and going lean the next day..
    CAUSES OF HIGH FUEL CONSUMPTION
(OPTIMUM SPEED FOR BEST FUEL CONSUMPTION IS BETWEEN 80-95 kmh)

Thanks for advicing us. I am driving a Toyota Noah 2litre 3S engine. I HAVE CHECKED and went through all the diagnosis you mentioned. Everything proves good. It goes 9-10 km with 1litre 0f petrol. Can a catalytic convertor cause high fuel consumption?

If it is standard exhaust setup, no..
      Must be other reason

Thank you for all of the above. My Ford Escape 2.3L 2008 4 cylinder only does on average 7 km/L, even more than my previous 3L V6! I am disgusted and puzzled!

Hi im owner of proton persona with iafm engine and my fuel consumption is very high its running 280km per 35 litres in 70% city 30% highway. Pls advice thank you.

I drive a Toyota Camry 2008 and the fuel consumption is excessive at the moment, I’ve been told is the catalyst that need to be replaced, is there any other thing that can account for the high fuel consumption? Thanks
