Piloted by team leader and Malaysia’s Drift King, Tengku Djan Ley Tengku Mahaleel, the Proton Iriz R3 Malaysian Touring Car joins the Proton Suprima S and Preve machines, which are steered by the current top two leaders of the championship – the partnership of Fariqe Hairuman and James Veerapen and Syafiq Ali respectively.
Its debut was made even more sensational when the Iriz R3 machine topped qualifying among the MTC cars as Tengku Djan clocked a fantastic 2 minutes 35.172 seconds to finish 16th overall in a combined session with the higher-powered Touring Production cars.
Fariqe and James was a shed slower at 2 minutes 35.865 seconds on his Suprima S machine to place a rung lower before being followed by Syafiq Ali and his Preve machine on 18th overall with a time of 2 minutes 36.491 seconds.
Despite the fantastic performance in qualifying and having the country’s top driver behind the steering wheel, the Iriz, however, is not expected to be challenging its elder sisters especially with the championship crown at stake and just two more rounds to go.
In an interview, Tengku Djan said that the Proton Iriz R3 is a project for the future with the upcoming Sepang 1000km endurance race (S1K) in November as its first realistic assignment before further works to be undertaken for next season.
He said the team was working with the race organisers to enter the higher tier Touring Production Championship next season; running a 1.6 litre turbo mill instead of the 2.0 litre NA engines typically used by competitors in that class.
With a five-speed race-spec manual transmission and 190 horsepower, the Proton Iriz R3 uses a slightly different 1.6 litre engine from the one in the Preve and Suprima S touring cars with a stouter Campro CFE engine as a base.
Tengku Djan, who is the defending champion for the S1K endurance race, said while the Proton Iriz R3 is on par with other cars in the MTC category in terms of speed, it is still not quite as quick as the Preve and Suprima S at the moment.
