  • 2012 VOLKSWAGEN JETTA HYBRID + 2013 CHEVROLET CORVETTE 427 CONVERTIBLE

The Detroit Auto Show 2012 saw Volkswagen unveiling its two new car models, The E-Bugster Concept and the brand new Jetta Hybrid. The E-Bugster Concept is quite similar to the beetle in terms of body design and features an electric drive. The Volkswagen Jetta Hybrid on the other hand sports a highly efficient electric motor and an improved petrol engine.

    2012 VOLKSWAGEN JETTA HYBRID

The VW Jetta Hybrid is equipped with a hybrid 4-cylinder 1.4 TSI 150 HP engine coupled with a 20 kW electric motor. The power is transmitted to the wheels by a 7-speed gearbox. The Jetta differs from other cars in its segment through the feature which allows one to drive the car on electric power only at the touch of a button and it can travel 2 kilometers in addition to attaining a top speed of 70 km/h in this mode.

The Jetta Hybrid is expected to face stiff competition from the highly popular Toyota Prius and the new Honda Civic Hybrid. The gas emissions and the mileage of the highly fuel efficient Jetta Hybrid make it better than most of its competitors which should give it an edge when it hits the market later this year.

In the Jetta, propulsion is handled by a combination of a four-cylinder 1.4 TSI (110 kW / 150 PS), a 7-speed DSG and an electric motor (20 kW). A unique feature here: at the press of a button, the Jetta Hybrid can be driven in a pure electric mode up to a speed of 70 km/h and a distance of two kilometres with zero emissions. The Jetta Hybrid is now the second Volkswagen, after the Touareg, to have a drive module consisting of both a petrol engine and an electric motor under the bonnet

    2013 CHEVROLET CORVETTE 427 CONVERTIBLE

Chevrolet unveiled the 2013 Chevrolet Corvette 427 Convertible Collector Edition the fastest, most capable convertible in Corvette’s history as well as a 60th Anniversary Package that will be available on all 2013 Corvette models.

The Chevrolet Corvette 427 Convertible blends elements of the Z06 and ZR1 models to create the fastest and most-capable convertible in Corvette’s history. Its heart is the 427 cubic-inch (7.0L) LS7 engine from the Corvette Z06. Rated at 505 horsepower (377 kW) and 470 lb.-ft. of torque (637 Nm), it is the most powerful engine ever installed in a production Corvette convertible and, like the Z06, the 427 Convertible is only available with a six-speed manual transmission.

The LS7 was co-developed with the Corvette Le Mans-winning GT1 engine and features lightweight titanium connecting rods and intake valves, as well as racing-inspired high-flow cylinder heads and a dry-sump oiling system. It is assembled by hand at GM’s Performance Build Center, where customers who purchase the 427 Convertible Collector Edition can purchase the Corvette Build Experience option and assemble the engine that will power their new car.

Supporting performance elements in the Chevrolet Corvette 427 Convertible include the driveline and rear axle system from the Corvette Z06, a rear-mounted battery and standard Magnetic Selective Ride Control. The standard 19-inch front and 20-inch rear wheels are wrapped in ZR1-style Michelin PS2 tires. Lightweight machine-face Cup wheels introduced on the 2012 Corvette Z06 with Z07 and Corvette ZR1 with PDE performance packages come standard and include unique gray-painted pockets. Black Cup wheels or chrome ZR1-style wheels are also available.
