2009 CHEVROLET AVEO5

In recent years, small, fuel-efficient cars have come back into favor due to higher fuel prices and changing consumer tastes. Within this market segment, one of the more popular choices has been the Chevrolet Aveo.

The Aveo5 wearing new sheetmetal with a more sophisticated look than the previous version (the Aveo four-door sedan was renewed last year). Built in South Korea by GM Daewoo, the Aveo5 carries Chevrolet’s new signature front-end styling, with a gold Chevy bow framed by a larger grille. Larger taillamps and an available rear spoiler dress up the basic econobox look nicely.

The cabin is said to be able to carry five adults. The rear bench has theater-style seating and a 60/40 split for cargo flexibility. Better interior materials are promised, with optional woodgrain, metallic, and carbon-fiber-look trim on the options list.

The Aveo5 also has a fold-down rear seat and it can carry up to 42 cubic feet of cargo. For power, both versions of the Chevy Aveo rely on a 1.6-liter, four-cylinder engine that delivers 107 horsepower and 106 pound-feet of torque. A five-speed manual transmission is standard, and there’s also an optional four-speed automatic.

ENGINE

ECOTEC 1.6L DOHC 16-valve 4-cylinder MFI engine with Variable Valve Timing and Dual Continuous Variable Cam Phasing (107 hp @ 6400 rpm, 106 ft·lbf (144 N·m) of torque @ 3800 rpm), 5-speed manual transmission to include shift indicator light.

NHTSA CRASH TEST RESULTS:

Frontal crash ratings:
Driver: 5 Star      Passenger: 4 Star

Side crash ratings:
Driver: 4 Star     Rear Passenger: 3 Star

Results based on a 35 MPH frontal crash and 38.5 MPH side crash. Results are reported in a range of one to five stars, with five stars indicating the best crash protection for vehicles within the same weight class. This test used driver and passenger belts and airbags.

NHTSA ROLLOVER RESISTANCE RATING: 4 Star

The Rollover Resistance Rating is an estimate of your risk of rolling over if you have a single vehicle crash. It does not predict the likelihood of that crash. The Rollover Resistance Rating utilizes a “fishhook” maneuver which is a series of abrupt turns at varying speeds to see how “top-heavy” a vehicle is. The more “top-heavy” the vehicle, the more likely it is to roll over. The lowest rated vehicles (1-star) are at least four times more likely to roll over than the highest rated vehicles (5-stars).

ABS
The antilock brake system (ABS) is a crash avoidance feature that helps prevent wheel lockup during braking on most slippery road conditions. Available on select models.

DUAL-STAGE FRONTAL AIR BAGS
Standard driver and right-front passenger air bags supplement the safety belt system to help protect the driver and right-front passenger in moderate to severe frontal impacts.

SEAT-MOUNTED SIDE-IMPACT AIR BAGS
Seat-mounted side-impact air bags help protect the driver and front passenger in moderate to severe side-impact collisions.

PASSENGER SENSING SYSTEM
Standard in every Aveo, the Passenger Sensing System automatically switches the right-front passenger air bag on or off based on the passenger’s weight and the type of pressure on the seat. A lighted indicator, located on the instrument panel, informs the driver of the air bag’s status.

TIRE PRESSURE MONITOR
The Tire Pressure Monitor measures the air pressure in each of the four tires. If any tire drops below a specified number, the system will display a warning symbol within the instrument panel.
