Chery Alado Automobile intends to capture a 10 per cent share of the SUV market with its soon to be launched 1.6-litre version of the Chery Tiggo to complement its existing 2-litre.
Powering the Tiggo will be two variations of the aluminium-alloy four-cylinder 16-valve Acteco engines that boast Variable Valve Timing, Controllable Burn Rate and Direct Gasoline Injection.
Chery is proud of their Acteco range of engines (from 0.8L to 4.0L), and through a deal with Fiat, the company is going to supply the Italians 100,000 units of 1.6l and 1.8L engines annually. Even the Alfa Romeo 159 will be equipped with Acteco 2.0T engines
The 2-litre engine pumps out 127hp and 180Nm of torque while the upcoming 1.6-litre will produce 117hp and 147Nm of twisty force. Transmission is a five speed manual for both engines in a 4X2 configuration.
Imported directly from China, the 1.6-litre version of the Tiggo will go for RM78,888 while the more powerful 2-litre will cost RM81,888.
Both prices are on-the-road inclusive of insurance and will be packed together with a three-year or 100,000km warranty.
Targeted at the young professional executive, the Tiggo promises sporty handling, courtesy of its Lotus-adjusted platform. Furthermore, the interior gets a four-speaker audio system and mini-USB port to keep the occupants entertained on the road.

Safety is kept in check as well with side-impact beams for the doors and ABS with EBD for the brakes. Only the 2-litre model, however, will get dual SRS airbags for the front passengers.
“We will be getting 200 units of the 1.6-litre version and 100 units of the 2-litre version until the year end. With that, we hope to capture at least 10 per cent of the market segment share,” said Iqbal Shaharom, deputy chief marketing officer of Chery Alado Automobile.
He said the Tiggo will join the locally-assembled Eastar MPV in its showrooms.
The Tiggo is expected to be launched between Nov 6 and 12. Currently, there are about 80 units each of the Tiggo running around the tax-free havens of Labuan and Langkawi.
