The 2.4-litre cars began arriving on Thursday, and most of the vehicles were delivered at the State Secretariat here by yesterday afternoon.
Brand new: The Perak Government’s new Toyota Camry cars arriving at the State Secretariat in Ipoh yesterday.

Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin said the remaining seven Toyota Camry would arrive in stages within three or four months.

The state, he said, would purchase the vehicles by tender and look into trading in the old Perdanas, some of which were still worth RM30,000 to RM40,000.

Besides Nizar and the 10 state executive councillors, the other recipients would be the state financial officer, the state legal adviser, the state assembly speaker, the state secretary and the Perak Mufti.

“The first nine will be used by exco members whose cars are in bad shape, breaking down regularly and incurring the most expense,” he told reporters at his office after receiving a report from Simpang Pulai assemblyman Chan Ming Kai on the Gunung Rapat elections for a new village chief.

Last month, the Pakatan Rakyat state government drew criticism from Barisan Nasional representatives after announcing that it would acquire the 16 Toyota Camrys for some RM2.7mil.

However, Nizar defended the purchase, saying it would cost the state RM1mil annually to continue maintaining the Proton Perdanas.

Meanwhile, asked if the state was recognising the results of the controversial Gunung Rapat elections that had not received his go-ahead, he said he would study Chan’s report and recommendations first.
