PROTON TO INTRODUCE TURBO-CHARGED ENGINE NEXT YEAR.

SHAH ALAM, Sept 23 — Proton Holdings Bhd will introduce a new turbocharged engine next year with Proton Exora as the first model to use it.

Its group managing director, Datuk Syed Zainal Abidin Syed Mohamed Tahir, said the engine’s performance would be equivalent to a two-litre engine.

“The engine will support Proton’s future products in relation to extending enhanced performance, emissions and quality standards,” he told reporters after the company’s annual general meeting here Thursday.

Syed Zainal Abidin said before year-end, the national carmaker would launch a facelift version of an existing model and a new model in collaboration with Mitsubishi Motors.

The new model is a Waja replacement, he said.

He said the price of the Waja replacement would be slightly higher in line with the better performance and features.

“Proton has started on the development of the hybrid and electric vehicles which are currently being subjected to performance evaluation, testing and safety assessment,” he said.

Syed Zainal Abidin said Proton was confident its export figure would be better than last fiscal year’s due to growing interests in China, Thailand and Indonesia.

“We are confident it would surpass 30,000-mark this year,” he said.

Meanwhile, Proton chairman, Datuk Seri Mohd Nadzmi Mohd Salleh, the national carmaker has no intention to sell Lotus Group International Ltd at the moment.

He said the focus right now was to turn the company around.

“We have no intention to dispose of Lotus at this point in time. By having Lotus within the group we will have better benefit,” he said.
