VOLKSWAGEN MPV – VW SHARAN 2.0 TSI

With over 600,000 units sold, Volkswagen’s Sharan is the favourite vehicle of countless families all over the world.

Equipped for the first time with electrically-powered sliding doors at the back, the Sharan has been enhanced in every area and is now available in Malaysia.

To live up to its versatile characteristics, the Sharan was launched very unconventionally to members of the media.

The event was held at the Carcosa Seri Negara as a media family day where media personnel and their families were given a rare treat to the versatility of the new premium MPV.

Volkswagen Group Malaysia Managing Director Mr. Ricky Tay said in launching this very special model in Malaysia, the company wanted to do something different, something relevant to the vehicle’s character.

“The Sharan is a very unique MPV. It has all the innovations from Volkswagen and adds more value with its attractive design, superior features and safety equipment, and comes with two very important technologies; TSI and DSG.

“And so, as much as this car is versatile for the family outings, it is also sporty enough to be driven with a special character. This is a vehicle everybody would love to have in their driveway,” he added.

Futuristic Design The third generation Sharan is the company’s first MPV to be designed by Mr Walter de Silva (Group Chief Designer) and Mr Klaus Bischoff (Brand’s Chief Designer) based totally on the new Volkswagen design DNA matrix. The design of the vehicle body, which is both appealing and functional, is thus epitomised by clear, horizontal lines. It is fresh, yet certainly not dictated by any transient fashion.

The aim of the design is rather to create with its balanced proportions and minimal lines an ideal basis for giving the body an extremely energetic look.

Front end: Following the new DNA, the Sharan unmistakably reflects the new era Volkswagen design, especially in the typical VW front end with its strong emphasis on horizontal planes and a clearly defined shape.

Smart yet versatile The electrically powered sliding doors have a pinch protection function that ensures safety on entry and exit. Innovations run throughout the body area like a common thread. The Sharan sets the new benchmark in the segment for the static and dynamic torsional rigidity of its body. Despite this, weight has been trimmed down.

Wrapped in ‘Vienna’ leather upholstery, the interior of the Sharan is given a very warm and welcoming feel. The ‘Titanium Silver’ decorative inserts for the dashboard and front door trim panels further enhances its appearance. The multifunction steering wheel and DSG shift is also covered in leather for that added premium feel.

To ensure occupants feel at home in the Sharan, the vehicle is equipped with roll-up sunshades for the rear door windows. The RNS510 touch screen radio with integrated satellite navigation system also comes with a TFT display, SD card reader and a DVD drive that has a hard disk capacity of 30GB.

This system is further enhanced with the mobile device interface MEDIA-IN with a USB adapter cable and AUX-IN option.

In addition to the ambient lighting, the Sharan’s interior is even more comfortable with illuminated vanity mirror in the sun visors, foot well lights for the front and rear, electronic parking brake with a hill-hold control and the auto dimming interior rear-view mirror.

For added convenience, there are two cup holders in every row of seats, three individual seats in the second row and two on the third row, a ‘Climatronic’ air-conditioning system with a 3-zone temperature control to ensure its occupants feel like they are sitting in their living rooms.

For the driver, the multi-function display ‘Plus’ ensures he or she remains connected to the vehicle and the journey at all times.

The ‘Park Assist’ parallel parking system with Park Distance Control (PDC) is enhanced by the rear view camera. This system is capable of handling both parallel and reverse parking and is the first time the Park Assist 2.0 is being features in a Volkswagen vehicle.

Not just any MPV At 4,854mm long, the Sharan ensures a spacious and comfortable drive. This is further enhanced with a wheelbase of 2,919mm, which makes the vehicle perfect for an outdoor trip with the family, shuttling the kids and even for daily driving usage.

Equipped with the sporty 17-inch ‘Sydney’ alloy wheels, the Sharan looks even more attractive with auto headlight activation with daytime running lights, leaving home and coming home functions. Bi-xenon headlamps with the capability of bending according to the angle of the steering ensure a brighter path up ahead.

To enjoy the fresh air, this MPV comes with an electric panoramic tilt and slide sunroof. Additionally, the side and rear windows are made out of heat-insulating glass for those extra hot and sunny days.

Additionally, other conveniences include the dual electric powered sliding doors remote controlled, a headlight washer system, rain sensors and a remote operated electric tailgate/trunk lid.

Think Blue: Being Fuel Efficient The Sharan is equipped with a 2.0-litre TSI turbocharged direct petrol injection 4-cylinder motor that is mated to the innovative 6-speed Direct Shift Gearbox (DSG).

This enables the 1,838kg MPV to deliver 200PS at 5,100rpm and a maximum torque of 280Nm that kicks in between 1,700 and 5,000rpm.

The torque band is wide and ensures this 7-seater multipurpose vehicle hits 100kph in just 8.3 seconds, before reaching a top speed of 218kph.

With a full tank capacity of 70 litres, the Sharan returns an efficient 8.5 litres/100km on a combined cycle. Environmental protection is enhanced with an emissions output of 198g/km.

Safety The Sharan boasts a 5-star rating by the European New Car Assessment Program (Euro NCAP) for adult occupant protection, thanks to a host of safety features in the vehicle.

The vehicle is equipped with an Electronic Stabilisation Programme (ESP), Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), 9 airbags – including one knee airbag on the driver’s side and the curtain airbag system for all rows of seats.

There are also side airbags for front and second row passengers.

To accommodate bigger families, the new Sharan comes with one integrated child seat on the left side on the second row including belt tensioners for the outer seats of the second row, in addition to the ISOFIX anchorage points.

Other innovative safety features include the Anti-Slip Regulator (ASR), Electronic Differential Lock (EDL), Engine Drag Torque Control (EDTC), Trailer Roll Stabilisation Program (TRSP).

Tech Package The ‘Tech Package’ includes a few extras such as the adaptive chassis control DCC, DYNAUDIO contour 300-Watt 8 speaker premium sound system, ‘Keyless Access’ keyless locking and starting system and the ‘Lane Assist’ lane departure warning system.

The Sharan is available in 6 shades of colours – Candy White, Toffee Brown, Reflex Silver, Night Blue, Indium Grey and Deep Black.

This latest premium MPV from Volkswagen is priced at RM245,888 for the standard option and RM269,888 for the Tech Package. Both variants are available at all authorised dealerships nationwide.
