KIA WILL REVEAL RIO SEDAN SOON

The new generation of the Rio was recently unveiled in hatchback form at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show earlier march. Kia will lift the covers off a sedan version of its new Rio series in a world premiere at the upcoming 2011 New York International Auto Show in mid-April.

The new Kia Rio hatchback has grown in size over its predecessor and, at least in Europe, it will also be offered in a sportier looking but less practical, three-door body style. The upcoming sedan model will most likely differ from the B-column and back, featuring a longer rear end with a more spacious boot.

While for European, Rio Hatch will be offered with a choice of three- and four-cylinder engines with outputs ranging from 70-to-109HP. No word yet on what type of engines will be available for the North American market model.

2011 FERRARI 599 GTB FIORANO

Tuning specialist Anderson Germany has some goods to offer with its new program for the Italian model, Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano. According on Anderson Germany’s list is the exterior that is finished in black with red pin stripes and matching alloy wheel designs. A new bodykit -again- from Hamann Motorsports is also part of the package.

2011 Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano leaves the factory with a 6.0-liter V12 engine delivering 620 ponies and 608 Nm (448 lbft) of peak torque. A new sports exhaust system from Hamann adds an extra 30HP for a total output of 650-horsepower with Anderson Germany claiming that the increase helps improve the standard car’s 0-100km/h (62mph) sprint time of 3.7 seconds, though the company did not release any numbers.

Tata motors interested in bringing Tata Nano world’s cheapest car via Proton. Will it be real soon? What will be the price range? Also known as 1 lakh car the Nano will be around USD 2400 = RM7200++ which is in the same price range of a motorbike. When it enters Malaysia market with that price, most probably people will tends to shift to buy car instead of motorbike. What is your opinion?

MUMBAI: Indian carmaker, Tata Motors, which makes the world’s cheapest car, Nano, has expressed interest to enter the Malaysian market by working with Proton.

“Mr (Ratan) Tata is keen to work with Proton again. About seven or eight years ago there were some joint discussions to manufacture cars but nothing came out of it,” Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin told Malaysian journalists here Wednesday.

“Now our automotive policy is more liberal and there are new opportunities.

“So we need to study if we can bring in this type of car (Nano) into Malaysia or work with Proton to produce the people’s car.”

The suggestion emerged after Ratan, chairman of Tata Group, one of India’s most respected industrialist met Muhyiddin, currently on an official visit to three Indian cities.

Tata Motors surprised the world in 2009 when its engineers rolled out the cheapest four-seater car, priced at one lakh or 100,000 Indian rupees (about RM7,000), which was termed the “people’s car”.

“He (Ratan) felt there should be some synergy because they had been in the automotive industry for a long time.

“He can bring his technical team to discuss with Proton or Perodua,” added Muhyiddin.

The retail price of petrol and diesel is expected to drop further soon following the drop in the global oil price, Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister Datuk Shahrir Abdul Samad said Sunday.

He said currently there was still room for reducing the fuel price and the government usually reviewed the price at the beginning or middle of the month before making an announcement.

However, he did not say by how much the price would go down and when it would be annnounced, when launching a “Price Reduction” campaign at the Sunshine Supermarket in Bayan Baru, here.

On Dec 3, the prime minister announced the drop in RON97 petrol pump price by 10 sen from RM2 to RM1.90 per litre, and RON97 and diesel from RM1.90 to RM1.80 per litre.

Asked further about the matter at a press conference later, Shahrir said because of increasingly cheaper petrol and diesel, the fuel subsidy could be removed while the people should not be expecting government subsidy forever.

“A subsidy is only given when the price of a commodity is high so as not to burden consumers and also to stimulate the economy. But when the price is low, there’s no need for subsidy to be given,” he said.

Asked on the request by the Federation of Taxi and Hired Car Associations Penang for the government to review the petrol subsidy of RM1.92 per litre, Shahrir advised them not to use the fleet card anymore.

He said the taxi drivers should get petrol at the pump price and the subsidy should no longer be given, and besides, based on records, there had been no requests from taxis for subsidy to be given to a level of RM1 per litre.

On efforts to reduce prices of goods, Shahrir said all quarters, including state governments and the local authorities, must cooperate to make the campaign a success and not just leave it to the government and ministry.

“Efforts to reduce prices should not be politicised as the opposition (state) governments also have the responsibility of caring for the welfare of the people,” he said.

Better aerodynamics to beat the Hondas

In an agreement with TRD Asia, which is based in Thailand, UMW Toyota Motor foresees the TRD accessories to be developed and manufactured locally if the demand of such items achieves desirable growth in Malaysia – a major factor in pricing and affordability to customers.

The TRD accessories from UMWT will be from the TRD Sportivo range, the tamed version of the full TRD version that is street legal. High-performance accessories will not be offered through UMWT for now.

The spoilers could fly you to the moon

Currently, the bodykits will be the first to be manufactured locally, whereas most of the parts – radiator cap, fuel cap, air filter, alloy rims and bucket seats – are sourced from either Thailand or Japan, according to Toshio Obara, senior technical co-ordinator, TRD Asia, during an interview session at a preview for the media yesterday.

UMWT is using the Toyota Vios as the prototype for the TRD accessories and will soon offer it to owners of the Toyota Altis. As for now, the facelifted Toyota Fortuner SUV has already been given the TRD Sportivo treatment.

UMWT aims to attract the younger customers who thirst for a sportier outlook in their vehicles.

While TRD accessories may be available from private importers, UMW Toyota Motor will be offering its accessories backed with full support and a three-year warranty.
