KUALA LUMPUR, May 22  — HICOM-Chevrolet Sdn Bhd, the distributor of Chevrolet cars in Malaysia, expects to sell 800 to 1,000 units of its newly launched, enhanced version of Chevrolet Captiva in its financial year ending March 2010.

Its managing director and chief executive officer, Sanjeev Garg said the company was constantly looking at quality and value that will meet the needs of its customers.

“Technology is advancing. We need to build something that customers always need because most of the customers coming for the Captiva segment are between 35 and 45-years old with a household income of more than RM7,000.

“These are the customers who are really technology savvy and they want something,” he told a media conference after the launch of the new model.

Sanjeev said 20 bookings have already been received for Captiva.

Launched in 2007, the Captiva was HICOM-Chevrolet’s maiden stake in the Malaysian automotive industry.

Among the enhanced features include a Bluetooth-capable CD/MP3 eight speaker audio system for the Captiva 2.0L Diesel.

The updated Captiva has been also fitted with beige leather interior, one-touch express up/down with pinch protection for the driver’s power window and ventilated discs brakes for the rear.

Other features and functions in the Captiva include among others, Electronic Stability Control, Hill-Descend Control, Traction Control System, Hydraulic-Brake Assist, cruise control and automatic lamp control.

Sanjeev also said the company was on track with its plans for growth in Malaysia.

“We still see growth opportunities in the Malaysian market, being one of the largest auto markets in Southeast Asia,” he said.

He said the company will introduce more models in the coming months, in addition to a more aggressive campaign to increase the number of Chevrolet vehicles on Malaysian roads.

To ensure easy customer access to Chevrolet service centres nationwide, HICOM-Chevrolet planned to add four additional 3S (sales, services and spare parts) centres within the next two months in Alor Setar, Langkawi, Kuching and Jalan Ipoh in Kuala Lumpur.

“We are well on our way to achieving our target of 15 3S centers by the end of the year,” he said.

Currently, the company has seven 3S centres across the country.

Asked on whether the company’s car sales has slowed down due to the higher interest rates for car loans, he said: “Definitely we have seen the impact last month. Last month sales were down for everyone.”

BANK SHOULD BE MORE PROACTIVE - APPLYING CAR LOANS IN MALAYSIA

Banking institution in Malaysia shouldnt have a problem in approving a loan especially in automotive market as they have not much burden on it. Now many of Automotive company in Malaysia has started to invest on their own credit organisation that will provide car loan to their own car buyers such as Naza Credit and Suzuki. But unfortunately, there are more restriction if applying loan from the credit organization and it is harder than from banking institution. It is not the government’s role to function as a bank to address lending or car loan issues, International Trade and Industry Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said today.

“Banks should do their job properly under the circumstances. They should not be so stingy in processing applications,” he told reporters at the soft launch of the National Mark for Malaysia Brand and Brand Entrepreneur Conference 2009 here.

Also at the launch, Raja Muda Perak Raja Dr Nazrin Shah delivered the keynote address.

“If banks are not proactive, the economy will shrink,” he warned.

Muhyiddin said the government might assist businesses by giving soft loans and grants but “the bigger chunk of loans would come from the banks”.

He was commenting on a recent suggestion by Tengku Tan Sri Dr Mahaleel Tengku Ariff that the government should act as a banker to address lending issues by banks.

The former group chief executive officer of Proton Holdings Bhd said that lending issues needed to be dealt with first so as to spur economic activities, particularly in the motor vehicle and construction industries.

Muhyiddin said that banks should have no problem in giving out loans as they were in a resilient position with low non-performing loan rate and higher liquidity ratio.

“They may just be having psychological problems about what is happening in Europe and the United States,” he said.

The minister said businesses were still exporting and ordering goods and products, adding that “if the export facilities are not granted, who is going to export?”

Earlier in his speech, Muhyiddin said that banks needed to start lending and consumers needed to spend more for demand to increase.

“Only then can the wheels of the economy start churning, cross-border trades increase and the economies of nations pick up speed,” he said.

VOLKSWAGEN PLANTS TO SUSPEND PRODUCTION IN CHINA

Two Chinese auto plants run by Volkswagen through joint ventures are planning to partly suspend production lines to conduct maintenance work, state television reported last weekend.

The news comes amid a huge slump in sales of vehicles in China, the world’s second-largest vehicle market after the United States.

China’s CCTV said in its midday bulletin that FAW-Volkswagen Automobile Co plans to suspend part of its production at a plant in Changchun, the capital of Jilin province in northeastern China, at the end of the year to carry out maintenance.

Shanghai Volkswagen Automotive Co will also suspend work at its production line for half a month from mid-Dec to early Jan, the Beijing News Daily reported.

The reports did not give details and calls to Volkswagen’s office in Beijing and the two joint venture companies rang unanswered on Sun.

Volkswagen sold about 910,000 vehicles to customers in China in 2007.

Vehicle sales in China fell 16% in Nov – a sharp reverse for China’s automakers, which saw sales grow by 18.5% in 2007. Global automakers were counting on fast-growing Chinese sales to help drive revenue growth as sales elsewhere weakened.

Industry Minister Li Yizhong said last Fri that Beijing is considering ways to revive sales including cutting taxes, offering low-interest loans or forcing older vehicles off the road. – AP
