2012 VOLVO S60 R-DESIGN + 2012 FORD FOCUS 5-DOOR HATCHBACK

Ask any car enthusiast what they think of Volvo, and most will probably comment on the unique boxy exterior design, or the brand’s extensive focus on safety, or the practicality of a wagon with more trunk space than most SUVs.

2012 VOLVO S60 R-DESIGN

 Unfortunately, Volvo all but abandoned the idea of high performance over the years, and even the exterior design, while still unique, has become more soft and conforming. Luckily, it appears the suits in Gothenburg have taken notice, as 2012 marks the return of a legitimate Volvo sports sedan in the form of the S60 R-Design.

 To create the S60 R-Design, Volvo turned to Polestar, an outfit that specializes in tuning Volvos. The result is an S60 that features a fully reworked suspension, retuned engine, aggressive body kit, and unique 18” wheels. The car came dressed in a very conspicuous shade of red, which helps give the car a more aggressive appearance, but definitely won’t help you stay unnoticed by your local law enforcement.

 Unlike some wannabe sports sedans, the S60 R-Design has the performance to back up this racy paint job. It begins with the powertrain, which features Volvo’s turbocharged 3.0 liter V6, tuned to produce a healthy 325 hp and 354 lb-ft of torque. The engine is mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission that feeds power to all four wheels. Although not the quickest off the line, once you’re underway there is plenty of power available in every gear.

2012 FORD FOCUS 5-DOOR HATCHBACK

 The first-generation Focus represented a radical departure in Ford’s styling language back in 1998 and it was an even bigger deal Stateside, and the latest Focus is a mature reinterpretation of the original design. The third generation design is light years ahead of that of the North American second generation, and it has a good aggressive stance despite its front overhang and its FWD configuration. It’s been over ten years since Ford has brought its world-class compact sedan and hatchback to America. During this time, those of us in the U.S. completely missed out on the second generation of the Ford Focus that the rest of the world had access.

 Focus has a 2.0L inline four cylinder engine that pumps out 160 hp and 146 ft-lbs of torque, which gives it decent acceleration from dead stop and acceptable passing power on the highway. It is mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission that gets the Focus a set of very respectable MPGs: 27/37 city/highway.

Attention to detail is also evident on this third-gen Focus, the fuel door is well integrated under the taillight on the right rear quarter panel, cleaning up some usual unnecessary clutter. Comes with optional 18-inch alloy wheels, which definitely help establish road presence. The handling on the Focus was a vast improvement over the previous generations. The steering was one of the tightest felt in a front wheel drive car in this class, and road feel was good and response was quick to the driver’s commands.

2012 MERCEDES BENZ SLK 350 + 2012 TOYOTA CAMRY SE

Unlike the somewhat drastic change that BMW made with the Z4, the SLK has not grown much. It’s 2 inches longer than the old car, with a minutely stretched wheelbase and an extra inch side to side. There is little new under the hood as well.

 Sure, the 3.5-liter V6 has gained direct-injection, and while that makes for a more significant jump in power on other Mercs like the C350, horsepower is only up two ponies to 302 and torque rises just 8 lb-ft for a total of 273. The result is a 0-60 time of 5.4 seconds, matching the outgoing model certainly nothing to be ashamed of. More than just an occasional use car. Then take the SLK’s cargo space. Even with the top down there is a useable 6.5 cubic feet of cargo space, enough to fit an overnight bag on your way to the airport for a quick business trip. Plus, with the top up, the trunk can hold 10 cu-ft.

Mercedes continues to offer just one transmission with the SLK, a 7-speed automatic, which comes with three different drive modes: efficiency, sport and manual. Continuously improved, the transmission’s Sport mode swaps gears effectively and is preferable to hitting the paddles yourself.

 Long before hardtop convertibles became as mainstream as they currently are, Mercedes offered the SLK, a car that continues to deliver incredible every-day practicality for a luxury roadster. With added refinement and much improved fuel economy, the SLK350 has moved further from being a weekend toy to becoming a feasible only car. At the same time, rather than lose some of the fun factor as it has matured, it now delivers a heightened driving experience. With the latest model, Mercedes is further proving that a luxury sports can in fact be your only car.

2012 TOYOTA CAMRY SE

More manufacturers are trying to eat Toyota’s lunch with dramatic mid-sized options aimed at taking at least a small number of Camry buyers away. The organic Hyundai Sonata and Euro-styled Kia Optima are the two biggest challengers for now, with a broad range of four-cylinder power options, including hybrid electric or turbocharged.

 But to appeal to the paper-thin slice that puts a greater value on driving enjoyment, Toyota has regularly offered an SE package that generally packs a thimble-full of extra visual punch. So, surprise. Toyota’s efforts on the new Camry SE go far beyond the usual wing&sticker brigade. After all, this is the same company that went above and beyond with the SE version of the Sienna minivan, turning it into a genuinely enjoyable machine.

 The Camry SE follows the same recipe, the front strut suspension is stiffened and lowered slightly, while the rear gets a more thorough makeover, including a fractionally longer, solid stabilizer bar that replaces the more pliant tube design. Also, Toyota engineers removed some of the fluid-filled bushings with more-rigid ‘pillow-ball’ designs for greater control. The result is hardly razor sharp and kidney-killing in its firmness, but compared to the regular isolation chamber Camry, the SE is a pleasant change.

 Like the rest of the Camry line, the SE is available with either a 2.5 liter four-cylinder that produces 178 horsepower and 170 lb-ft of torque or an optional 3.5 liter V6 with 268 horses and a useful 248 lb-ft of torque. Both engines use the same six-speed automatic transmission that drives the front wheels alone. Mechanically, they’re identical other than the V6 getting wider 225/45/18 all-season tires on 18-inch wheels, four-bangers get 215/55/17s on 17-inch wheels of the same design and dual chrome exhaust tips instead of one.

2013 LINCOLN MKT + 2012 HYUNDAI AZERA

2013 LINCOLN MKT

The standard engine for 2013 is a more powerful and efficient 3.7-liter V6 that includes twin independent variable camshaft timing (Ti-VCT). The ability to vary camshaft timing to optimize the opening and closing of intake and exhaust valves increases the engine’s power and efficiency. Horsepower for 2013 increases to 300 from 268, a 10 percent increase achieved with projected fuel economy ratings that improve to 17 mpg city, 25 mpg highway, a 1 mpg highway improvement. The MKT now offers more standard horsepower than the Audi Q7 and Acura MDX and nearly matches the 302-hp Mercedes-Benz R-350. Fuel economy for the MKT achieved on regular unleaded fuel surpasses these competitors by as much as 4 mpg highway.

Lincoln MKT is equipped with two versions of the six-speed Select Shift Automatic transmission, both with steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters. The 3.7-liter Ti-VCT V6 uses the 6F-50, and the more powerful 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 uses the heavy-duty 6F-55. This transmission features high-energy friction materials, a larger ring gear and a specific torque converter that optimize the 6F-55 to handle the high-torque output of the twin-turbo 3.5-liter.

All-wheel drive is standard with the twin-turbo 3.5-liter V6. In good weather over smooth roads at modest speeds when AWD is not needed, the system intelligently routes power only to the front wheels, improving fuel efficiency. When driver input or road conditions indicate that slip might occur, the system sends power rearward to help prevent tire slip from happening in the first place (such as on rain-slicked or snow-covered roads).

2012 HYUNDAI AZERA

Hyundai Motor America introduced the all-new Azera in a North American debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show. Azera is the fifth vehicle to adopt the company’s signature Fluidic Sculpture design language.Tucson, Accent, Elantra, Sonata and Azera now all have a modern, sleek, sophisticated style, creating the illusion of constant motion. This flagship Fluidic Sculpture sedan also features a more powerful Lambda II 3.3-liter GDI engine, six-speed transmission, best-in-class combined fuel economy of 23 miles per gallon and a wide range of advanced safety equipment.

Azera’s Fluidic Sculpture design takes inspiration from the mechanics of flight. The exterior of the all-new Azera is long, light and low. The unique, undulating beltline allows for a long, sleek roofline accented by the third window and wraparound LED taillights. A monoform side profile includes flowing lines. The face is masculine with a large powerful chrome grille and HID headlamps that integrate precise details. The stance is completed by available 19-inch multi-spoke wheels.

Special attention has been paid to other interior details, such as an optional panoramic sunroof, which allows more natural light into the cabin and 3D Carbon interior accents. Ambient lighting compliments the vehicle’s modern appearance. Other unexpected luxury appointments include an electrochromic auto-dimming mirror with HomeLink and power rear sunshade and manual rear side window shades. The side shades can be inconspicuously tucked away when not in use and no other car in the segment offers them.

2012 AUDI S4

The 2012 Audi S4 is essentially unchanged from last year, although a few previously optional features are now standard equipment. Based on the Audi A4 sedan, the S4 represents a more raucous and enthusiast-focused interpretation. With a supercharged 3.0-liter V6 churning out 333 horsepower to all four wheels and a sport-tuned suspension, the S4 can definitely bring a smile to your typical sports car fanatic.

Inside, the S4′s tastefully appointed cabin remains calm and quiet despite the increase in performance. Even better, a lengthy list of upmarket features is available, your budget permitting. Convenience is also unaffected by the increase in performance, with comfortable accommodations for four and a decent-sized trunk.
