KUALA LUMPUR: The government will increase the availability of natural gas for vehicles (NGV), if there is an increase in public demand for it.

“I assure you, if there is a high demand for NGV, the government will definitely step up its effort to make NGV available for the consumers,” said Deputy Domestic Trade, Co-Operative and Consumerism Minister Datuk Rohani Abdul Karim.

“The door is not closed for NGV, but there has to be a demand and a need for it,” Rohani told the Dewan Rakyat this morning.

“As for now, it is still an open choice for the consumers,” she added. Rohani was responding to a question by Johari Abdul (PKR–Sungai Petani).

“NGV is a very good alternative to petrol, especially in light of the ever-increasing petrol prices,” Johari had said earlier.

“However, it is difficult to find petrol stations equipped with NGV facilities. It doesn’t seem like the government is serious in supporting the campaign to use NGV.”

Rohani said there are currently 144 NGV-equipped stations in the country, with 86 of them within the Klang Valley. The stations cater to approximately 44,156 NGV users nationwide – with 99% of the users being taxi drivers.

“We are targeting to have 200 stations equipped with NGV facilities by end of this year,” said Rohani.

She said the government appointed national oil and gas company Petronas as the lead player in providing NGV to users.

“Since 2007, Petronas has spent RM535 million in subsidies for NGV. The actual gas price is RM2 per litre, but with the subsidy, consumers are able to enjoy it at 68sen per litre.”

Rohani said a full tank for a car using NGV costs about RM12, which is good for at least 300km – hence the reason it is popular among taxi drivers as a cost-saving alternative to petrol.

On why there are not many NGV-equipped petrol stations around, Rohani said there are many factors that needs to be considered before furnishing a station with NGV facilities, such as profit and loss factor, terrain aspects and even the risk of explosion-like mishaps.

PROTON CONTINUES SEARCH FOR STRATEGIC PARTNER.

KUALA LUMPUR, July 1 — National car producer, Proton Holdings Bhd (Proton) will continue its efforts to find a new strategic partner after failing to strike up a partnership deal with Volkswagen, the Dewan Rakyat was informed Thursday.

Deputy Finance Minister Datuk Donald Lim said among Proton’s present strategic links include product collaboration with Mitsubishi and regional cooperation with China and Iran.

“The increasingly challenging environment globally for the automotive industry will affect whatever efforts Proton takes towards a strategic partnership.

“However, a strategic partnership need not necessarily involve equity with one company only and such a practice is quite normal for a global automotive company,” he said when replying to a supplementary question from Khairy Jamaluddin (BN-Rembau) on Proton’s plans for a strategic partner.

Donald said the government will continue to ensure that Proton stays competitive, as well as raise the marketability of its vehicles, increase its operational capability and achieve economies of scale.

REAR SEAT BELT RULING FOR CAR PASSENGERS WILL NOT BE REVOKED

Rear Seat Belt Ruling For Car Passengers Will Not Be Revoked

The government will not revoke the rear seat belt ruling for car passengers although it will cause problems for big families, said Transport Minister Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat.

He said it had taken large families into account by giving some relaxation adding the public should not take the matter lightly.

“The relaxation does not mean that we can carry as many passengers as possible. This must not be our practice,” he said when winding up debate on his ministry’s budget in Dewan Rakyat here Tuesday.

Ong said implementation of the rear seat belt ruling reflected the ministry’s commitment to increase public awareness on road safety and that the ruling effective January next year had been implemented abroad.

The government had held advocacy campaigns since June to inform the public that the ruling only covered vehicles registered after Jan 1, 1995.

“Most of the cars presently come with rear seat belts. For those not fitted, the government is trying to get manufacturers to install them for free.”

On security at ports, he said all vessels should comply with standards fixed by the International Marine Organisation (IMO) and officers given proper training to avoid falling prey to pirates.

Ong also said the Klang Port Authority had identified land around South Port to develop a ‘harbour city’ aimed at making Port Klang a ‘world renowned seaport city.’

The government was also implementing social programmes in 22 districts in rural areas aimed at getting motorcyclists wear crash helmets and obtain licences.

Government Still Providing Fuel Subsidy

The government is still providing fuel subsidy to fleet card holders like lorry and bus operators as well as fishermen, Deputy Finance Minister Datuk Kong Cho Ha said Wednesday.

Kong said the government was using the automatic pricing mechanism to determine the retail prices of petrol and diesel, based on the global crude oil prices.

He said this in reply to a question from Dr Haji Dzulkefly Ahmad (PAS-Kuala Selangor) in the Dewan Rakyat Wednesday concerning the retail prices of petrol and diesel which have been lowered by the government following the drop in the world crude oil prices.

In early 2008, the crude oil prices were on the rise, going up to US$140 per barrel in the middle of this year.

Kong said in August this year, the world crude oil prices declined and the downtrend was continuing.

“In line with the downtrend, the government has from time to time reviewed and reduced the retail prices of petrol and diesel,” he said, adding that the prices had been lowered four times over the past two months.
