PROTON’S P-G ANDERSSON CLINCHES A SECOND OVERALL SPOT

April 2, 2012 6:00 pm / Leave a Comment / iz

Proton’s P.G. Andersson in action in the Brother International Rally of Whangarei in New Zealand.

P-G Andersson drove commendably in his Asia Pacific Rally Championship (APRC) debut to clinch a second overall placing in the Brother International Rally of Whangarei in New Zealand.Battling back to reduce an overnight deficit of more than one minute as a result of a puncture, Andersson set the fastest time on five of the final day’s eight special stages to finish second overall 28 seconds behind the Skoda Fabia S2000 of Chris Atkinson.

A further two minutes behind was India’s Gaurav Gill. Proton teammate and defending APRC champion Alister McRae, meanwhile, finished fourth in the APRC class and fourth overall after enduring a difficult start to the rally in which, by virtue of starting first, played the role of ‘road sweeper’ for the rest of the competitors. PROTON’S P-G ANDERSSON SHINES IN RALLY DEBUT

Proton’s P-G Andersson drove commendably in his Asia Pacific Rally Championship (APRC) debut to clinch a second overall placing in the Brother International Rally of Whangarei in New Zealand which ended this afternoon. Pushing hard all day to reduce an overnight deficit of more than a minute as a result of a puncture, Andersson set fastest time on five of the final day’s eight Special Stages and came within 28 seconds of the Skoda Fabia S2000 of Chris Atkinson (who was formerly with the Proton team). A further two minutes behind was India’s Gaurav Gill in third place.

Defending APRC champion Alister McRae meanwhile, drove his Satria Neo S2000 to fourth place in the APRC class and fourth overall after enduring a difficult start to the rally. By virtue of starting first, McRae played the role of ‘road-sweeper’ for the rest of the participants as he sped along the gravel tracks typical of the New Zealand event. There were 16 Special Stages over a competitive distance of 283.28 kms.

Andersson’s APRC campaign, on the other hand, had gotten off to a brilliant start when he was fastest through SS1. But a puncture in the next stage cost a minute and a half, dropping him to fourth in the APRC category. He fought back valiantly to finish the day in second place among the APRC contenders.

Protons were dominant with a clean sweep of the top three placings in the 2WD category as defending APRC 2WD champion Karamjit Singh took top honours ahead of privateer Mike Young in another 1600 cc Satria Neo. The team’s new member Kenneth Koh, in his very first international rally, also clinched second place in the APRC Junior category behind Young.

“To have both Andersson and McRae on the podium [in the APRC class] in the presence of intense competition, especially from the field of experienced local drivers, is an encouraging start to the season. We have the pace but in this case, we were a bit unfortunate to have been held back by punctures,” said Datuk Abdul Razak Dawood, the Head of Proton Motorsports.

“It’s going to be a close fight for this year’s APRC Championship. I have full confidence in the team with Andersson and McRae to defend the APRC title which we won in 2011,” he predicted.

“Proton’s performance in the 2WD class, however, has been a huge step forward. The participation of three privately-run 1600 cc Satria Neos is a great boost for Proton and in recognition of the vehicle’s competitiveness,” added Datuk Abdul Razak Dawood who has been involved in Proton’s rallying activities since the earliest days with the PERT team.

Proton’s Director of Group Marketing, Branding and Motorsports, John Chacko, said the participation of privately-run 1600cc Satria Neos underlined a strong and growing acceptance for the brand internationally.

“This is a tremendous boost in support of Proton’s aspirations of becoming a competitive global car manufacturer. As a manufacturer, we are committed to be better and the results in New Zealand certainly goes a long way in proving this point,” he said.

PROTON CELEBRATES 2011 APRC SEASON

November 19, 2011 3:47 pm / Leave a Comment / iz

Rallying has produced a great result for Proton in the 2011 APRC.They beat the established team like Mitsubishi and Subaru in that competition.Proton also has became the first car manufacturer to win all all eight individual titles in the championship. In addition to the APRC driver’s and manufacturer’s title, Proton also won driver’s titles of the FIA Asia Cup and FIA Pacific Cup. The Group N 1,600cc Proton Satria Neo completed the trophy haul by bringing home the FIA APRC Rally Cup 2WD driver’s and manufacturer’s title, and FIA APRC Junior Cup driver’s title.

For Proton, they said that, motorsports has injects plenty of excitement into its brand or its particular model, and it provides a platform in which technology and technical know-how can be developed and applied to the future road-going models.Read the full news from motortrader below.

WINNING HELPS MAKE PROTON BETTER

Rallying produced a triumphant result for Proton when it emerged as a dominant force in 2011 to clinch the coveted Asia Pacific Rally Championship Manufacturer’s and Driver’s titles. Pitting the Satria Neo S2000 against veteran makes like Mitsubishi and Subaru, Proton won four of the six APRC rounds this year.

In doing so, it became the first car manufacturer to win all eight major individual titles in the championship: the overall FIA APRC manufacturer’s title; FIA APRC driver’s title; the FIA APRC Teams Trophy; the FIA Asia Cup driver’s title; and the FIA Pacific Cup driver’s title.

Proton’s Group N 1600 cc two-wheel drive Satria Neo also, helped to clinch the remaining three titles that included the manufacturer’s title in the FIA APRC Rally Cup for two-wheel drive category; the FIA APRC Rally Cup two-wheel drive driver’s title; and FIA APRC Junior Cup driver’s title.

This is Proton’s first APRC win after 7 years. It was a 3-time winner of the championship in 2001, 2002 and 2004 and returned for a full season in 2010, finishing second in the APRC Manufacturer’s championship.

“All in all, it has been a phenomenal year for us in competition,” said Proton Group Managing Director Dato’ Sri Haji Syed Zainal Abidin Syed Mohamed Tahir, who attributed the company’s success to its philosophy of being “Committed to be Better”.

“At Proton, we are committed to be better and this extends to both competition and in the manufacturing of production vehicles for the global market. We are also committed to winning, and excelling in competition significantly supports our aspiration of becoming a truly competitive global car manufacturer,” he said.

Events like the APRC have provided Proton with enormous exposure – seen by television viewers in over 129 countries with an estimated audience of over 390 million viewers worldwide.

“For car manufacturers, motorsports injects plenty of excitement into a brand or a particular model, and it provides a platform in which technology and technical know-how can be developed and applied to future road-going models,” Dato’ Sri Haji Syed Zainal Abidin said. A clear example of this, he added, was in the strong foundation in ride and handling characteristics shared by both the winning Group N Satria Neo and what customers can experience in a production model Satria Neo, and other current Proton models.

The Group N Satria Neo rallycar was jointly developed with renowned Japanese tuner CUSCO which sells it to competitors in Japan taking part in both the APRC and Japanese Junior Rally Championship. An even more meaningful achievement is the fact that the rallycar has also become the very first Proton and Malaysian-manufactured car to be made into a rallycar in Japan.

“Beyond its promotional benefits, it is Proton’s goal to have our achievements and the technology derived in competition transcend into our future generation of vehicles,” Dato’ Sri Haji Syed Zainal Abidin said. “Motorsports is a cost-effective and wide-reaching platform which we believe offers tremendous value and return of investment. Proton’s involvement is aimed at not only reaffirming our presence in the region in a bigger way, but designed to serve as a prelude to our future products.”

Proton driver Alister McRae turned around his misfortunes on Day 1 to finish third in the Satria Neo S2000.

The other two podium finishes were by Karamjit Singh and Japanese teammate Akira Bamba finishing first and second respectively in the APRC1600cc Two Wheel Drive category.

Bamba also secured the inaugural FIA APRCJunior Championship title with the Cusco prepared Proton Satria Neo Group N rally car.

Another Malaysian driver Gunaseelan Rajoo clinched the Class “A” title in the APRC 1600cc Two Wheel Drive category, in a Class “A” Proton Satria Neo.

The results in Japan will set the stage for a three-way battle for this year’s APRC crown with McRae leading Proton teammate Atkinson followed by Indian driver Gaurav Gill in a Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X.

“We had a good run in Japan considering that the terrain and stages suited the turbocharged all-wheel drive cars better.

“The results might have been a lot different had it not been for McRae’s puncture and Atkinson’s retirement on the first day but that’s the nature of rallying.

“Having said that the Satria Neo S2000 performed well against the more powerful turbocharged cars and the results are testimony to the level of progress we have made in terms of development of the car,” said Datuk Abdul Razak Dawood, Head of Proton Motorsports.

He said Proton was committed to deliver better results this season and had won three of the five rallies so far.

“One more round will determine the APRC championship and rest assured that we will be fighting hard to end the season on a high note,” said Abdul Razak.

UPDATE

In an unexpected turn of events, the winner of Rally Hokkaido was disqualified for a technical infringement which has in turn handed Proton the driver’s title for the 2011 APRC.

With the amended results of Rally Hokkaido, Alister McRae currently leads the APRC driver’s categorywith a seven point advantage over Chris Atkinson, with the championship to be decided between the two Proton team mates when the final round of the 2011 season moves to Rally China in November.

Winning the recently-concluded Rally Hokkaido, Indian driver Gaurav Gill had set the stagefor a three-way fight for the APRC crown between him and Proton’s McRae and Atkinson.

Gill, driving a Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X had won the rally ahead of Japanese team mate and reigning APRC champion Katsuhiko Taguchi, with McRae in third place.

Upon inspection later in the day however, stewards from the International Automobile Federation (FIA),disqualified Gill for a technical infringement on his vehicle.

This promoted Taguchi to rally winner and McRae to second place, and with not enough points to contest for in China, eliminated Gill’s shot at the driver’s title.
