The 2012 Nissan Almera has finally been launched at an official ceremony at One World Hotel. Much is known about the locally-assembled Nissan B-segment sedan except for its finalised pricing, which has been announced as RM 66,800 for the 1.5 E manual, RM 69,800 for the 1.5 E, RM 76,800 for the 1.5 V, and RM 79,800 for the 1.5 VL. Malaysians interested in the Almera will be pleasantly surprised as these prices are lower than the RM70K to RM85K range announced when booking opened almost two months back.
The successor to the Latio, the Sentra and the Sunny, the Almera sits on Nissan’s all-new V (V for Versatile) global platform that also underpins the March hatchback. The rest of the dynamic package is par for the segment, including an electric power steering, front MacPherson struts, a rear torsion beam, ventilated disc brakes up front, drum brakes at the back, and 185/65 R15 tyres.
Motivation for all four variants comes from Nissan’s HR15DE 1.5 litre four-cylinder engine that generates a mediocre 102 HP at 6000 rpm and 139 Nm at 4000 rpm. Transmission options are either a five-speed manual that gets you 15.9 km/litre in fuel economy or a new four-speed automatic that still returns an impressive 14.9 km/litre.
The Nissan Almera’s main selling point should lie beyond dynamics or performance, focused on the class-leading rear legroom of 636 mm, derived from the same 2600-mm wheelbase as on its predecessor, the Latio sedan, and the generous boot capacity of 490 litres. In fact so large is the B-segment Almera that it has been classified as a mid-size sedan by the U.S. agency EPA.
The Nissan Almera E is equipped with a single driver’s airbag, 15″ steel rims, remote keyless entry, and a trip computer; the Almera V adds a front passenger’s airbag, alloy wheels, fog lamps, door pillar garnish, remote trunk release, and silver-cum-chrome trim inside; and the Almera VL further comes with Intelligent key, push-start button ignition, automatic climate control with LCD display, Fine Vision Meter with multi-information display (MID), and steering audio controls.
Safety features standard across the Nissan Almera range count ABS, EBD, Brake Assist, three 3-point rear seat belts and Isofix child seat mounts. Also available for all three variants is a three-year/100,000-km warranty and a choice between five exterior colours: Bronze Gold, Sapphire Black, Twilight Grey, Tungsten Silver and the only solid Brilliant White.

If you are jumping into the Almera for the first time, start with the rear seats instead of the front.The Almera will be produced at Tan Chong Motor Assembly (TCMA)’s RM230 million plant in Serendah, one of TCMA’s two plants in Malaysia. To support the Almera’s launch, a further RM 15million was invested to expand the Serendah plant.
A little less known fact was that although TCMA’s plants are not owned by Nissan Motor Co., they are recognised by the principals at Nissan to be among the best in Asia outside of Japan.TCMA’s Segambut plant was the first automotive plant in South East Asia to be awarded the ISO 9002 quality assurance certification.When the Renault-Nissan Alliance was building its plant in Chennai, India, TCMA’s Serendah plant was used as the benchmark.
When asked why Tan Chong decided to produce the Almera locally rather than to import it from Thailand, Edaran Tan Chong Motor’s general manager of product planning Christopher Tan explained that last year’s tsunami in Japan and floods in Thailand serve as a reminder that in order to ensure stability of a business, ETCM has to have control over production activities.He also added that producing the Almera locally allows ETCM to better tailor the model to Malaysian taste. He used the example that Thai made Almeras had unpainted bonnet underside, which is acceptable to Thais but not to Malaysians.On the question of adopting a four-speed automatic rather than a CVT used in some markets, Tan explained that the decision is made based on requirements of Malaysian consumers and the region’s sourcing options.
Note that the same four-speed automatic is adopted even in developed regional markets like Australia.In Asean, a CVT is paired to a three-cylinder 1.2-litre engine to meet Thailand’s eco-car requirements but such a set-up would not be suitable for Malaysians.China’s 1.5-litre CVT Sunny is an exception because Jatco, the Nissan affiliated CVT specialist has a production plant in China.Tan was also keen to stress that the four-speed automatic is not an “old” unit but is an all new design that’s 11 per cent more compact, 15 per cent lighter and 32 per cent less friction compared with a similar unit in the Latio.However, Tan did not rule out the possibility of introducing a CVT later in the Almera’s model life as JATCO is poised to start producing CVTs in Asean in the near term, thus opening a possibility for TCMA to purchase CVT units from our neighbours.While the affable Sunny 130Y may invoke a sense of nostalgia in many readers, it is also worth noting the Tan Chong is one of the oldest car companies in Malaysia, as old as the country.
